How To Use Fall Prevention Alarm For Elderly People With Dementia

It is a big challenge for loved ones and caregivers who are taking care of elderly people with mental disorientation like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. As the healthcare industry is adapting to technologies, more new tools and solutions have been induced to address the requirements for both patients and professionals. Among other devices, the chair alarm pad is one of the widely used systems that alert caregivers of any attempt made by the patient to get up from a chair. Here are some helpful tips on how to use such a device on chair and bed.

Setting the Alarm

The fall prevention alarms are usually lightweight and portable, allowing you to use it anywhere in bed or chair. You just attach the alarm to the chair, bed, or back of their clothing. There are two common types of chair alarms – magnetic alarm and mat alarm.

The magnetic alarm has a string attached to a magnet on one end. It has a clip on the other end. The one that set with the alarm will go off when it is moved and separated. When the patient tries to get up from the chair, the body will put pressure on the chair, triggering a signal to the alarm. The alarm sound will stop when the magnet is reconnected.

Meanwhile, a mat alarm is connected to the alarm under the chair. When the patient moves and tries to stand up from the chair, it will indicate the alarm at the bottom and ring the signal. This device comes in various designs. Some models come with a press button that requires you to press it after the patient sits on the mat. Other designs have automatic functions that don’t require manual operations.

Bed alarms

Just like chair alarms, bed alarms also function through the weight distribution of the patient. First, you will need to adjust the weight of items on the bed to zero. Consider the weight of all the linens, mattress, and bed sheets before the patient gets in the bed.

Manufacturers offer various types of chair alarm pad for the elderly so that users can utilize the device in a way that suits the condition of the patient.
